Summary

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells starts out with the description of a stranger coming into the small town of Iping. There, he remains in an Inn, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hall, living there without answering any of the host’s questions about where he’s from, what his purpose was, or why he looked the way he did. Upon his arrival, a man by the name of Teddy Henfrey had already accused the stranger of being a thief. This stranger had his head wrapped up in bandages, wore a shirt, a long overcoat, gloves, shoes, glass goggles, and a hat, showing nothing but his pink nose. This stranger, Griffin, did not like being disturbed by anyone so he lost his temper towards anyone that made the mistake of bothering him. Why, you might ask? Because he is invisible! Hence the title The Invisible Man.

The next day, Griffin receives dozens of crates filled with scientific equipment. That is when he started experimenting on trying to find a cure that could reverse his invisibleness and make him become visible again. Out of anger in not succeeding, Griffin started doing bad things. He went against the town’s religious beliefs, and he robs the Inn since he has run out of money. The Halls almost caught him, but he got away unnoticed since he was invisible. The Next day, Griffin revealed himself to the people of the Iping village. Griffin was then caught, but he took off his entire disguise, making him completely invisible, and he fled the town. He later brought Marvel, a homeless man he found, to take all of his scientific notes and equipment back. The town attacked them, but being invisible, Griffin had an advantage, and he beat them off, leaving some townspeople very injured.

The invisible man and Marvel ventured off to another town, Port Stowe, where they stole money together. Griffin gave most of the money to Marvel, who then ran off with it. Griffin followed him and attempted to kill him, but more people fight Griffin off, who fled after being shot at. He came across a house that happened to be owned by one of his old college friends named Kemp.

Griffin began telling the story to Kemp of how he became invisible. When he was younger, he loved to study about invisibility. To further his study, Griffin stole money from his dad, who then committed suicide. Once Griffin had invincibility all figure out, he used it on himself, started stealing from various places, and soon went to Iping to continue his work. In the end, Kemp had called the police and many angry townspeople caught the invisible man and killed him.

In the epilogue, it is revealed that Marvel still holds all of Griffin’s research notes.
